Keynote: The Sustainability Trailblazers - Nada Santiago, Principal Product Manager, IBM LinuxONE Hardware Solutions
In recent years, sustainability has leapt to the forefront of corporate priorities. Customers, employees and investors are all pressuring companies to communicate more clearly and show results.

While many companies have a sustainability strategy, only 35% of companies can be considered "trailblazers" who are acting on that strategy, according to a recent IBM business value study. It is those trailblazers who are addressing the real challenges and seeing the benefits of going sustainable.

Join IBM as we discuss how trailblazers are using open source solutions to build a sustainability strategy, harness data and AI to address reporting challenges, and galvanize stakeholders for differentiation and growth.

Keynote: Mainframe Modernization Can Transform Your Business - Alan Clark, Director, Open Source and Industry Initiatives, SUSE
What more could you want from your mainframe? Aren't mainframes almost an anathema to the doctrine of modern computing any way? According to a Forrester research report, while many executives describe mainframes as old-fashioned they also agree that they're not going away. In fact, they're growing and are a central component of modern business strategies.

With the few minutes we have together, SUSE will discuss the benefits mainframe modernization can help with today’s IT challenges. Customer Success Stories Incorporating Zowe in Their z/OS Transformation and Modernization Journeys - Joe Winchester, IBM
The Open Mainframe Project's Zowe components have been used successfully by many customers to help with a number of their z/OS modernization and transformation projects. This talk will focus on some of these, ranging from building DevOps pipelines for more agile deployment of software, building custom dashboards with the Node SDK, automation with the python SDK scripts, and successful use of the CLI to bridge older REXX scripts with modern scripting front ends. Rather than this talk being a bottom up "Hear how Zowe works and what it can do" this is a top down "Hear how customers have successfully used Zowe". In my job at IBM supporting Zowe customers I have talked to over 50 accounts to help them deploy and be successful with Zowe across a very wide range of scenarios, and this talk distills the common patterns I encounter in the field.

Integrate the Mainframe into Your Broader IT Security Strategy - Que Magnus, Micro Focus
With cybercrime on the rise around the world we must think about the mainframe in a new way. Organizations must identify secure, modern mainframe access and application-level security controls aligned to their cloud-first strategy. Integrating the mainframe into a broader IT security strategy that includes MFA to is key to ensuring that only authorized individuals access your critical assets. Where mainframe organizations struggle is extending enterprise security control to mainframe application access and development.

Additionally, implementing data masking helps to ensure that mainframe data stays secure while complying with regulations. Untold numbers of organizations could have reduced their risk of a data breach with this practice.

And, ensuring that mainframe applications are secure while they are being developed is key to your overall security strategy – including apps written in COBOL.

In this session you will learn how to:
  • Integrate the mainframe into your broader IT security strategy, including MFA
  • Secure mainframe data with data masking
  • Ensure modern mainframe access when moving to the cloud

Zowe (r)evolution with V2 and Beyond - Jakub Balhar, Broadcom & Dominico D'Alterio, IBM
Zowe is at the moment undoubtedly the most popular mainframe Open Source solution. With the release of the V2, there is no doubt that it’s a mature and widely adopted solution. Based on the research up to 70% of mainframe users plan to deploy Zowe by the end of this year. But what does actually Zowe brings to the table? Where is it going in the future? In this session you will learn about the main use cases for Zowe and why it may help you with challenges you are facing either if you are in a modernization process by introducing other approaches to access the mainframe than just the traditional TN3270 green screen or if you are onboarding new talent, not experienced on the mainframe. You will also learn what’s next, and what are the next areas of improvement going further within V2. Last but not least you will be introduced to the incubators that are bringing totally new capabilities to the Zowe and we hope that you will love them.

Zowe Gets Chatty! - Domenico D'Alterio, IBM
Zowe Chat is a new project that seeks to provide a vendor neutral way to run chatbots and allow choice in the use of chat technology. Chat technology is simple, universal, and versatile. Zowe chat is to make it multivendor. It is important because the onboarding of the next workforce in today’s evolving hybrid cloud environment is challenging. Newcomers have limited time to learn new interfaces to interact and need an easy way to interact with knowledgeable peers frequently. Chat technology is an intriguing new way to obtain and share information. It can be used by an individual to access information or by an IT team collaborating doing development, administration or troubleshooting issues. Think of “human to machine” or “team with machine” as two high level use cases. Human-to-machine might be used to query the status of a job, or CPU utilization in a quick and convenient way. Team-with-machine might be a collection of subject matter experts working to solve a problem and sharing information in real time. In either use case chat technology is lightweight, fast, and most likely already resides on your desktop, laptop or mobile devices. The Zowe focus is on chatbot technology that provides a bridge between the humans and machines or applications.

The New Workforce: Integrating the Next Generation With the Greatest Generation - Spencer Hallman, BMC
As the current generation of mainframe developers retire, how should companies integrate the next generation with their current development staff. If companies hope to retain new developers, they will have to adapt to how the new generation has learned to code. As well as the tools they use such as Eclipse, VS Code and GIT to the 3270 world and mainframe SCMs that the greatest generation of mainframe developers use. Many organizations may be more concerned with the problem of maintaining and enhancing code written in a "mainframe" language such as Cobol. Where are they going to find programmers to write Cobol? They should be more concerned about the tools and interfaces they are offering to their prospective new hires. Every CompSci graduate has learned the basic constructs of code. You can teach them to code in Cobol in less than a month. However, they have become comfortable and efficient coding in their interface of choice which is not the 3270 emulator. The next generation needs a set of tools and interfaces they are familiar with. These decisions will affect the productivity, morale and retention. In this talk we will explore the challenges that companies are facing today and how they can best excel with both the next generation and the greatest generation.

Lockdown: Zero-Trust Architecture with Zowe’s API Mediation Layer - Jakub Balhar, Broadcom
Protecting software systems from malicious actors and attacks has always been critical to the enterprise, and the challenge of securing software has only increased as the use of software expands to meet new business demands and attract new employees. This protection is nowhere more important than in the systems of records embodied by the Mainframe. Zero-trust architecture is an industry-leading response to this security challenge, and it raises the security bar without compromising on user experience. Zowe, an Open Source project built for mainframe, was created with zero-trust in mind, and Zowe’s API Mediation Layer is the zero-trust enforcement behind API access to Mainframe system APIs. Learn how Zowe’s API Mediation Layer implements the zero-trust architecture using standard mainframe security resources, and how to best configure Zowe’s API Mediation Layer to keep your business secure.

Managing Changing Business Requirements with Continuous Modernization in Hybrid Environments - Venkat Pillay, Cloudframe
Transformation of COBOL to Java may be as easy as a push of a button – but the project isn’t complete when the code transformation is done. Much of the work remains ahead.   Organizations with multiple modernization projects, mainframe DevOps processes, and modern CI/CD for their new applications are often in a transitory or hybrid environment. Updating mission-critical legacy applications and also needing to deploy these updates into their new cloud environments. How do these organizations manage this hybrid, ever-changing environment? By implementing Continuous Modernization before the target environment CI/CD. Continuous Modernization (CM) involves continuous transformation and verification, allowing organizations to implement changing requirements without disrupting modernization progress. Organizations can now benefit from CM/CI/CD.
CloudFrame CEO Venkat Pillay will present the value and concepts involved with CM.
